Colour Me Happy

As many of you will have noticed, I recently refreshed the Angel Wings Holistics website. I've taken it from dark & mysterious to fresh and spring-like with a lot less jargon!

Bright, fresh green and sunny yellow now leap off the screen and my favourite yellow tulips are on the front page, replacing the starry night background and mysterious dark blue tones.

I really feel like the website is more a part of me now. Light, bright, golden spring colours make me look my best, according to a recent style consultation with the wonderful Anita from House of Colour; so it made sense that my website should "wear" them too.

I've never been very good at picking clothes, always ending up with some nice garments, but no idea how to wear them & no nicely coordinated outfits to speak of. Like many of us (especially the ladies) I have always shied away from colours, because I didn't know how to wear them, and I always ended up looking like a clown. That's not really the image I was going for. As a result, trusty old black made up most of my wardrobe until very recently, along with a few muted colours.

Anita showed me how much better my skin looked next to the bright spring  colours and gold jewellery - yes, she's very strict, no more silver allowed! She told me that my key words when looking for clothes should be "Clear, light, bright and warm." I realised as soon as she said it that she was also describing my personality, and it got me thinking about how colours affect our mood & our energy.

She pointed out to me that black really does nothing for me, it actually makes me look tired and old, so why did I always wear it?

It got me thinking about why black is such a "safe" colour that most of us seem to pick? Looking at ladies around town and in the office I work in, I started to notice how many of them were wearing black, almost as a cover up or a protective bubble.

From a colour therapy point of view, black is a very protective and peaceful colour. In this day and age, it's understandable why many of us are so drawn to it and layer on lots of black protection against the daily grind of bad news stories telling us about recession, war, misery, the price of petrol and depression. Take that coupled with the belief that it's somehow a "slimming" colour  (personally I'm not convinced) and black's a winner.

According to Anita, a lot of people shouldn't be wearing black at all - like me for instance.

Following our session, I have started wearing a bright turquoise scarf, bright orangey lipsticks and warm navy and browns.  And I do feel different. I feel lighter, more vibrant and happier all round.

Having researched my colours I discovered that turquoise is calming and harmonious, navy is very healing, orange tones bring joy and vibrancy and browns keep you grounded and focused.

Maybe it really is time to ditch the black and colour yourself happy!
